LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rachel Alexandra had a visitor yesterday. A young girl named Rachel wanted to meet the 3-5 favorite for the Kentucky Oaks. It was her wish, and the Make A Wish Foundation made it come true. The 7-year-old girl is seriously ill.
Hal Wiggins, the filly’s trainer, could hardly contain his emotion this morning as he told the story of the two Rachels. The towering filly, Wiggins explained, seemed to lower her head to allow the girl to deliver a pat of affection. They could be together again Friday, in the winner’s circle, after the Oaks.
Shortly after the renovation break at 8 o’clock this morning, Rachel Alexandra went out for what was to be a routine gallop. But her gallops are hardly routine. She was bursting with energy and nearly pulled the exercise rider, Rudy Gallegos, out of the irons.
“She’s like a keg of dynamite,” Gallegos said afterwards.
Rachel Alexandra has won four consecutive stakes by a total of 23 1/4 lengths, but the margin could have been greater. Her rider, Calvin Borel, has yet to call on the filly’s best. In the Fair Grounds Oaks, he stood up in the irons and began easing her with a sixteenth of a mile remaining.
She has won three of those four races by leading from start, but Wiggins said that getting to the front early isn’t necessary. Although a handful in her gallops, she’ll rate behind another horse, as she showed in the Martha Washington at Oaklawn Park and in an allowance victory last year at Keeneland.
“The only time we planned on going to the lead with her was at the Fair Grounds,” Wiggins said. “The track was sloppy that day, and we didn’t want that stuff kicked back in her face.”
Wiggins said he doesn’t expect Rachel Alexandra to grab the early lead Friday. A trio of fillies trained by D. Wayne Lukas occupy the inside three post positions. Wiggins said he anticipates one of them going for the lead out of the gate.
But, of course, everybody expects Rachel to have the lead when the field turns into the stretch. Slying Spur loves an "off" track. Gabby's Golden Gal and Justwhistledixie have trained impressively here. But Rachel Alexandra is, at the risk of stating obvious, very special. The best filly to come along since Rags To Riches, Rachel is the most impressive horse I've seen this week.
Derby notes
I Want Revenge, the 3-1 early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, had a good morning at Churchill Downs. He jogged up the one-mile chute and then galloped a mile, evincing good energy throughout. This was his first time back to the track after Tuesday’s half-mile workout.
Papa Clem worked three-eighths of a mile in 34 seconds this morning, galloping out a half-mile in :47.20.
“He was so comfortable,” said his rider, Rafael Bejarano. “I didn’t have to push him or nothing. Past the wire, I just him gallop out strong.”
I was stranding up by the one-mile chute when Papa Clem worked, and so I didn’t see it, except for the gallop-out. And he looked full of energy.
Desert Party continues to make a positive impression. He doesn’t seem bothered at all by the many visitors to the stable area or by the photographers.
Chocolate Candy also had a good morning. He galloped 1 1/2 miles, or slightly more, and seemed relaxed, but willing.
Ran began falling this morning about 8:30, taking a respite about noon, but it remains in the forecast.
