Top Commander

That was just wrong.

Top Commander, a former stakes competitor who earned $246,050 in his career, left the track in the horse ambulance after today’s fifth race at Lone Star. Actually, he never got involved in the race. He dropped back immediately after the start and ran far back, with a very choppy stride, down the backstretch. Apprentice jockey Dusty Shepherd struggled to get him pulled up for the length of the stretch.

Top Commander had run a few good races at Oaklawn Park while in for a claiming price of $6,250. And today he dropped another rung on the claiming ladder, to $5,000. Yes, it looked suspicious, as if his connections were begging somebody to claim the 8-year-old gelding. Nobody did.

Top Commander obviously should not have been in the starting gate today. Jorge Lara, by the way, trains Top Commander for Lee Racing Stables.
