French Open Day 14
Ana Ivanovic won her first Grand Slam title Saturday, but it's a safe bet it won't be her last. The 20-year-old Serb made the most of her third Grand Slam final by dominating Russian Dinara Safin, 6-4, 6-3 to win the French Open.
Ivanovic, who lost to Justine Henin in last year's French Open final and Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final in January, finally showed the poise and talent of a champion after letting nerves get the best of her on the two previous occasions.
And the French Open title might be the first of many. Ivanovic has the game to win not only on clay, but on hardcourts and the grass of Wimbledon as well. Her blistering serve and big forehand make her a threat on any surface. Her improved footwork and defensive skills have helped her take her game to the next level.
Ivanovic's success can also serve as inspiration for Safina, who had a breakthrough tournament by simply reaching her first final. And like Ivanovic, Safina has the talent. Now it's just a matter of gaining the experience of playing on such a grand stage.
