Cotet and Nichols earn MWC honor
TCU senior Cosmin Cotet was named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while fellow senior Kewa Nichols earned MWC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Cotet, ranked No. 29, won all six of his matches last weekend as the 31st-ranked Horned Frogs won their first three Mountain West Conference matches of the season.
Cotet, playing in the top singles position, won all three of his matches in straight sets, including a victory over UNLV's No. 69 ranked Elliot Wronski, marking the sixth ranked opponent Cotet has defeated this season. In doubles play, the 45th-ranked duo of Cotet and Kriegler Brink dominated in victoies over over UNLV, Air Force and BYU.
The weekly conference award is the third for Cotet this season and the fourth in his career at TCU. The Horned Frogs have totaled five awards overall this year.
Nichols also went 6-0 last week to help lead the 22nd-ranked Horned Frogs to a 13-4 and a 3-0 start in Mountain West Conference action. Opponents didn’t win more than two games against Nichols in both singles and doubles play over the weekend.
The Austin native posted victories of 8-2, 8-2 and 8-0 playing at the No. 2 doubles position against the three MWC opponents. The award is the second for Nichols in her career at TCU and the fifth accolade in the past six weeks for the women’s tennis team.
