Guard Stephon Marbury was asked on a live interview with ESPN SportsCenter today which teams he has spoken to as he looks to try to get out of his deal with the Knicks and play somewhere this season.
"I have spoken to Boston, Miami and Mark Cuban," he said, "Mark Cuban" evidently being synonymous with the Dallas Mavericks, but he quickly added, "all that talk is irrelevant because I can't get out of my deal" with the Knicks.
Asked if he had a verbal agreement to join the Celtics, again he said, "If I could get out of my deal with the Knicks, I would be able to choose. ... I don't know where I could go. I'm basically locked in where I can't play basketball."
Marbury has essentially been banished by the Knicks this season.
Cuban said late last season that he's a Marbury fan. But at the time Marbury wasn't free to speak with other teams.
ESPN's Chris McKendry raised the question of whether the Knicks want to keep Marbury from joining the Celtics until after March 1, which would make him ineligible for the playoffs.
