North Side

When North Side produced its first all-state football player in more than 40 years this season, everyone at the school was pleased, coach Chris Killian said.

But none more than the honoree, Jorge Martinez, a junior who averaged 41.1 yards on 34 punts to earn first-team all-state recognition for Class 4A by the Associated Press.

"He was humbled by it. And honored," Killian said.

The Steers did not have much success on the field in 2007, going 0-10. But Killian said there is plenty of credit to go around for Martinez's accomplishment, including to special teams coach Conley Wendt.

"He helped him with his mental approach, how to target the ball, and fundamentals," Killian said. "George didn't go to any special camps. He just has unbelievable talent. Coach Wendt did a tremendous amount of work with him."

The Fort Worth ISD had a second all-state player in Eastern Hills senior receiver Dwaine Guyton, who made the AP second team.
