Boys soccer: FM Marcus 4, Arl. Sam Houston 0 (final)

The Texans gave it a valiant effort, but Marcus, the defending Class 5A state champions, were much too strong. The Marauders went up 2-0 less than a minute into the second half and cruised to victory from there.

Boys soccer: Flower Mound Marcus 1, Arlington Sam Houston 0 (halftime)

Sam Houston is struggling to find its rhythm against a very talented Marcus team and hasn't generated any scoring chances.

Marcus defender Phil Charles has the only goal on a 35-yard volley that deflected off a Sam Houston defender.

Arlington and Mansfield schools combine to form District 4-5A

The five Class 5A Arlington schools and Mansfield and Mansfield Summit will form District 4-5A as announced by the UIL on Friday.

Arlington, Arlington Bowie, Arlington Lamar, Arlington Martin and Arlington Sam Houston had shared District 8-5A with Cedar Hill, DeSoto and Duncanville. DeSoto was sent out east with the Mesquite and Tyler schools while Cedar Hill and Duncanville joined the Grand Prairie and Irving schools.

Mansfield and Summit are the only holdovers from the original District 4-5A.

"It's kind of what I thought it would be," Bowie football coach Kenny Perry said. "It's good for neighborood rivalries, but I'm going to miss playing the big 3 [Cedar Hill, DeSoto and Duncanville]."

Final: Arl. Martin 52, Arl. Sam Houston 41

Arlington Martin salvaged its season with a 52-41 victory at Martin High School.
With DeSoto and Duncanville locks for the postseason, the two remaining spots in District 8-5A are up for grabs among Sam Houston, Cedar Hill, Arlington Bowie and Martin. The Lady Warriors entered Tuesday’s match one game behind Sam Houston, Cedar Hill and Bowie and needed to close the gap. And with games against favored DeSoto and Duncanville and having lost to Sam Houston already, Martin needed to win.
The Lady Warriors (17-12, 5-5 in 8-5A) did not allow Sam Houston to get out in transition. Martin slowed Sam Houston (20-10 5-5) with a halfcourt trap—designed to get the ball out of the hands of talented guards Kasondra Foreman and Janice Davis—and a zone defense that allowed little room inside. The Lady Texans, No. 7 in the Star-Telegram Class 5A area rankings, never solved the defense and rarely got easy looks.
Martin , by contrast, continually fed post Donna Jackson, who scored a team-high 21 points. Her and Kelsey Spencer combined to score all the points on a 10-0 run that pushed Martin’s lead to 15 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Sam Houston and Seguin jobs filled

Arlington Sam Houston and Arlington Seguin hired new head football coaches Friday after combining for just one win last season.
Danny Edelman, who led Bay City to a 6-5 record and the playoffs in his first season, replaced George McFarland at Sam Houston. The Texans were 0-9 last season and have won just four games in the past four years.
“This program has been successful in the past, so it’s just a matter of polishing that tradition and getting things going in the right direction,” Edelman said.
Seguin went with a first-time head coach, choosing Cedar Hill defensive coordinator Carlos Lynn to succeed Ricky Albus. The Cougars were 1-9 last season.
Lynn, a Dallas native, has been an assistant at Cedar Hill for 10 years, helping the Longhorns go 16-0 in 2006 and win the Class 5A Division II state championship. He spent the previous three years at his alma mater, Wilmer-Hutchins.
“I’ve always wanted to be a head coach, so it’s very exciting, but I really don’t have time to be excited because there’s so much to do,” Lynn said.
Edelman has guided teams to the playoffs in 11 of his 14 seasons as a head coach, and his 1998 team at Wichita Falls Hirschi advanced to the Class 4A regional final.
