Lady Kangaroos seek revenge against Legacy

Weatherford coach Phillip Beyer admits that his girls overlooked Mansfield Legacy the first time the two teams played on Feb. 29, in the Lady Kangaroos’ second District 4-5A game.
“Not to take anything away from Legacy but my girls know that they overlooked them,” he said. “They are a first-year program and no one expects them to beat anybody and they beat us 1-0. It was an unearned run and we didn’t hit the ball.
“That was so early in the year. Plus, that was our second game back from a tournament. District focus wasn’t there. Two nights before we played Aledo in a game (and lost 2-0) where some emotion came out in that game because they are our rival.”
Legacy (7-12, 3-7) will garner a lot more admiration from Weatherford (12-9, 7-1) this time around when the two face off Friday in Weatherford at 5:30 p.m.
“I don’t think that they will overlook them,” Beyer said. “I am hoping that this is a statement game. It is the start of the second round of district. We have been to the playoffs two straight years and are trying to make it a three years in a row.”
Weatherford has shut out its last six district opponents and picked up its first loss since its Legacy defeat on Tuesday in a nine-inning 7-6 loss to Midlothian.

District 6-4A matchup pits unbeatens

The Birdville Hawks haven’t tasted defeat since Feb. 22 against Hurst L.D. Bell. That streak could be in jeopardy Friday against Keller Fossil Ridge.
The last two undefeated teams from District 6-4A will square off at Birdville with a 7 p.m. first pitch.
The Hawks enter the game at 15-6 and 7-0 in district. They’ve won 12 straight and have allowed an average of two runs per district contest. Fossil Ridge is 13-6 and 6-0 in 6-4A.
“Fossil Ridge has a good ball club,” Birdville coach David Hatcher said. “Those kids have played really well this year. They may be as good as anyone we’ve played the entire year.”
Hatcher noted that Fossil Ridge might come in with a bit of an advantage because it hasn’t played since a 5-1 loss to Southlake Carroll on March 22. Birdville played on Tuesday in a 10-0 win over Saginaw Boswell.

Stephenville girls' basketball coach Ron Berry is leaving the school for Class 2A Cisco, Stephenville athletic director Joseph Gillespie said Thursday.
Berry, who has a career record of 627-552, had two stints with Stephenville from 1981-1988 and 2004-2008. After Berry took over in 2004, the Honeybees made the playoffs three straight years before missing out this year with a record of 14-16. A search for Berry's replacement is under way.

Lamar girls soccer eliminates Trinity

Sam Houston boys soccer wins shootout vs. Trinity

After a 1-1 draw in regulation, the Arlington Sam Houston boys soccer team won the shootout 3-1 to eliminate Euless Trinity in the Class 5A bi-district playoffs.

The Texans received shootout goals from Julio Fernandez, Samuel Alvarado and Yasir Mohamed.

Trinity's Louis Haynes managed to get his shootout attempt past Sam Houston goalkeeper Josue Gonzalez.

Wedemeyer leads Grapevine to 2-1 win in playoff debut

Freshman Clarissa Wedemeyer scored two goals for Grapevine in the first 13 minutes and the Lady Mustangs’ defense held serve in the second half to advance in the Class 5A playoffs with a 2-1 bi-district round win over Carrollton Creekview at Dragon Stadium on Tuesday. Wedemeyer scored goals in the 8th and 13th minute for Grapevine and Allie Tripp headed in a goal for Creekview (11-9-4) in the 15th minute. The Lady Mustangs (18-4-0) will play Cedar Hill in the area round Friday at a location to be determined. Cedar Hill defeated South Grand Prairie 4-0 in its bi-district game on Tuesday. Wedemeyer acted like a post player in basketball by rebounding a missed opportunity by a teammate inside the six-yard box and blasting it home for a 1-0 Grapevine lead in the 32nd minute. Less than five minutes later, Wedemeyer made it a 2-0 game after she rocketed a ball of the goalkeepers’ right thigh as she knelt down to block the ball.
“I’ve told her to her face that I may never coach someone like her again,” Davis said. “Her attitude and personal character are as good (as there is). You are going to see her name. Clarissa Wedemeyer is a name to remember.”
