Rangers claim Ryan Garko

The last spot on the Texas bench is no longer in question, as the Rangers have claimed the first baseman off waivers from Seattle. Garko has played for both Cleveland and San Francisco before joining the Mariners in the off-season. He now takes the role that Matt Brown and Max Ramirez were competing for. He gives the Rangers a right-handed bat with some pop. He has 55 career homers and 247 RBI. Garko, 29, hit 21 homers in 2007 and had 90 RBI in 2008. He hit .220 this spring with Seattle.

"Ryan's a veteran guy and he's done this job before," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He can play first, catch a little bit. Obviously he's been very productive in his career against left-handed pitching in particular. He's got some track record in this role."

The Rangers optioned Max Ramirez to Oklahoma City and have told Matt Brown they'd like him to be their primary third baseman for OKC.
