Cruz added to All-Star team

Nelson Cruz, who had 20 homers and 50 RBI, has been added to the All-Star team as an injury replacement for Torii Hunter. Cruz, who hasn't played the past three games as the lineup shuffles to accommodate the return of Josh Hamilton, will be making his first All-Star appearance after seemingly falling out of the Rangers' plans at the start of the 2008 season.

But Cruz cleared waivers after not making the team out of the spring training and blossomed into the MVP of the Pacific Coast League. He was called up in August, each game over the final five weeks of the season, and was the Opening Day right fielder this season.

Cruz joins Josh Hamilton and Michael Young as All-Stars, and the Rangers might not be finished adding to the team. Dustin Pedroia, who edged Ian Kinsler to be the starter at second base, is considering staying home to be with his pregnant wife, who has experienced some complications. Kinsler would be the logical choice to replace Pedroia, and a decision could come Saturday.
