The Rangers needed to find one more spot on the 40-man roster, and they created it by designating third baseman Travis Metcalf for assignment. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Metcalf, who was thought to be a candidate for the starting job until Michael Young was moved to third in the off-season.
In other roster moves:
Right-handers Joaquin Benoit and Eric Hurley have been placed on the 60-day disabled list and don't count against the 40-man roster.
Right-handers Willie Eyre (groin) and Dustin Nippert (back muscle) are on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27.
The Rangers purchased the contracts of shortstop Elvis Andrus, infielder Omar Vizquel, outfielder Andruw Jones, left-hander Eddie Guardado and right-handers Kris Benson and Jason Jennings from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Catcher Emerson Frostad and right-hander Derrick Turnbow have been reassigned to minor-league camp.
