From the desk of the GM

This isn't an edict from general manager Jon Daniels, though he was using the land line in his office to call me back.

The Rangers continue to scan the free-agent market and continue to speak with potential starting pitchers and relievers to bring in before spring training starts. That happens in less than two weeks. One such pitcher is Eddie Guardado, and major-league sources said a deal could be finalized within the next few days. The final details, such as the no-trade clause, are being ironed out.

Jason Jennings also remains on the radar. He was seen pitching at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington as recently as Jan. 23, and conversations between his agent, Casey Close, and Daniels have taken place the past week.

As for Close's other agent, Ben Sheets, the lines of communication remain open, but there hasn't been much progress. That could change after the Mets and left-hander Oliver Perez agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract. Sheets is believed to be next on the list of best unsigned starting pitchers.
