Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said at his exit press conference that the team will not offer Marty Turco a new contract and the team will go in a new direction.
``I just felt like it was time we went in a different direction," Nieuwendyk said, a former teammate of Turco's ho became GM last summer. "I think he clearly understands the situation."
Turco holds franchise records for wins (262) and games played (509) and shutouts (40).
"I want to thank Marty for 10 years of service here," Nieuwendyk said. "He's a friend, he's been a terrific competitor and a fan favorite. He has a lot to be proud of."
The Stars acquired Kari Lehtonen, 26, in the off-season and expect him to be their No. 1 goalie for next season. They are in talks with free agent Jussi Rynnas and hope to sign him. Rynnas will probably make a decision in the next month or so.
Jere Lehtinen said he has a very tough decision about retiring and will consider it heavily. Lehtinen, 36, has battled injuries in recent years and said that will be a big factor in whether he decides to return.
``My body...it is tough,'' Lehtinen said. ``I will take some time, I don't know how much, but I will take some time and think about everything and make a decision.''
When asked about Lehtinen, Nieuwendyk said he was open to having him return, but said he believes that Lehtinen is seriously considering retirement.
``He really doesn't know, he really doesn't,'' Nieuwendyk said. ``We'll give him some time and then react.''
Nieuwendyk said that he will do the same thing with Mike Modano, and Modano reiterated that he needs time before he can react. Nieuwendyk said the ideal situation would be to know before the draft June 25-26, but said he would adjust depending on the players.
In other news:
Jamie Benn is traveling to the Texas Stars today and will join the team for its playoff run. He also is supposed to be in consideration for the World Championships in Germany May 7-21.
Brad Richards, Brenden Morrow and Stephane Robidas have all told Team Canada that they will not be participating in the World Championships. All three said they need to allow injuries to heal. Trevor Daley is the only player who might have surgery, as he could have a small procedure on his shoulder.
The Stars are still considering holding training camp on Prince Edward Island. They will probably know in about a month.
