Marcus Spears had a goal to get into great shape and slim down, and he's done that. He said coaches suggested 309 pounds, and he came in at 307, losing 21 pounds in the process. Spears credited a few things, including those hot Louisiana summers as well as a chef and nutritionist. Spears will also have a chef this season.
The hardest food to give up? Fried catfish, which he says his uncle makes with a great recipe. "When I got to Baton Rouge I told him to stay away from me," Spears joked. "You can’t totally give it up, but I’m down to (just eating it) once a month."
His new favorite is a grilled shrimp salad. Spears said the weight loss, especially considering his two previous right knee surgeries, has him feeling much better on the field.
"It’s bothering me because of the turf and cutting," Spears said of the knee. "But you can tell when you lose weight it holds up longer. You’re able to cut better and keep your feet more. The first 3-4 days of training camp I had to catch up with my speed mentally. I was falling a lot, and it’s a process you have to get into. Now the process is to maintain where I’m at (with weight) and keep getting better."
