Texas regents gave unanimous approval today to a new contract for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, bumping his salary to $900,000 per year and making him the successor to coach Mack Brown.
The deal will pay Muschamp at least $2 million per year as the Longhorns’ head football coach if he replaces Brown as soon as 2010. Muschamp’s salary would increase every year after that.
If Mushcamp, selected in November as Texas’ coach-designate, is not the head coach by January 2013, that portion of the contract would be renegotiated at a figure higher than $2.5 million. Brown, who just completed his 11th season, earns a base salary of $2.9 million as Texas’ coach.
Asked on national signing day about a possible retirement timetable, Brown said he did not promise incoming players that he would coach the team for the next five seasons.
“I told them I thought I would be here (for five years) … I plan on being here,” Brown said. “But at the same time, if something happened to me, then nothing changes. Will steps in, we get a new defensive coordinator and we move forward.”
